John M. Poneros, MD
Overview
Dr. Poneros is a Professor at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Program Director of the Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship. He also serves as the Associate Director of the Endoscopy Unit and is a Fellow of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the New York Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Dr. Poneros graduated from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed his fellowship training at Massachusetts General Hospital. After serving on the faculty at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Poneros returned to New York-Presbyterian Hospital in 2008. He has published widely on pancreaticobiliary diseases and the treatment and evaluation of Barrett’s esophagus. Dr. Poneros maintains a busy clinical practice and has been named a New York Magazine Castle Connolly Top Doctor.

Research
I am a trained interventional endoscopist who performs invasive pancreatico-biliary procedures. I serve as the Acting Director of Endoscopy at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia and the Acting Clinical Chief of the Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases. With a gift from the Diller von Furstenberg Family Foundation, I established the Pancreatitis Program at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia. My research interests include the study of Barrett’s esophagus, pancreaticobiliary diseases, and endoscopic techniques. I am currently a site PI on an NIH funded study using a catheter-based optical coherence tomography imaging system in Barrett’s esophagus.
