Membership
Membership in the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICCC) is available to Columbia University faculty (Assistant, Associate, or Professor level) with interests in cancer, cancer-related research, clinical trials and cancer training, and who meet the criteria outlined below. Applications for membership are subject to the approval of the HICCC Membership Committee and the Cancer Center Leadership Team. The HICCC Membership Committee and Cancer Center Leadership Team evaluate new membership applications on a bi-monthly basis and review the entire membership annually.

There are two categories of membership, each associated with different criteria:
Member
Any one of the following satisfies the eligibility requirement for a Member:
- Faculty with a demonstrated commitment to cancer research, as a Principal Investigator or Project Leader on a peer-reviewed cancer research grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) or an NCI-approved peer-review agency or organization. Grants must be current or applications submitted within the last three years.
- Newly-appointed tenure-track faculty in cancer research with demonstrated institutional support from their academic department and applying for independent cancer-related research grants funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) or an NCI-approved peer-review agency or organization within three years of recruitment.
- Faculty who conducts clinical research as a leader of clinical trials: Principal Investigator of an active investigator-initiated cancer trial; study Chair or Co-Chair of a National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN), Experimental Therapeutics Clinical Trials Network (ETCTN), or Industry-sponsored clinical trial.
- Faculty who serve a leadership role on an NCI-sponsored clinical research committee.
Associate
Any one of the following satisfies the eligibility requirement for an Associate:
- Newly-appointed non-tenure-track faculty in cancer research with demonstrated institutional support from his/her academic department and applying for independent cancer-related research grants funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) or an NCI-approved peer-review agency or organization within three years of appointment.
- Faculty with a developing interest in cancer research, as demonstrated by submission of a cancer-related research grants funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) or an NCI approved peer-reviewed agency or organization within the last three years.
- Co-investigator on a peer-reviewed cancer-related research grants funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) or an NCI-approved peer-reviewed agency or organization: biostatistician, population scientist, pathologist.
- Faculty who lead an HICCC Shared Resource.
- Faculty who enrich the overall interdisciplinary research environment through an active role in program development, cancer clinical trials and/or accrue patients to cancer clinical trials (e.g., co-investigator on an oncology related clinical trial).
- Site PI for multicenter clinical trial for which we are not the lead site (external lead – either industry, NCTN/ETCTN or external peer-review).
Benefits of HICCC Membership
HICCC membership provides investigators with:
- Access to HICCC Shared Resources at favorable rates.
- Opportunity for clinical research support for protocol management.
- Funding opportunities:
- Pilot projects for HICCC Members.
- Developmental fund to support the development of Program Projects, SPORES or Training Grants in cancer research.
Responsibilities of HICCC Membership
- Participation in HICCC Program meetings and activities.
- Provision of updates relating to scientific accomplishments: biosketches, publications, grant support, clinical protocols, and other information that may be needed to fulfill requirements for designation as an NCI designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
- Acknowledgement of HICCC Shared Resource facilities, space, or support, when appropriate, in research publication.
