Overview

Sara Zaccara, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Systems Biology at Columbia University and a member of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Edward P. Evans Center for Myelodysplastic Syndromes. She completed her bachelor's and master's degrees in biotechnology at the University of Florence and earned her PhD in Biomolecular Science from the University of Trento, Italy.

Dr. Zaccara’s research focuses on m6A epitranscriptomics, a key post-transcriptional mechanism for gene expression regulation. She made significant advances in the field with her paradigm-shifting 2020 study in Cell, challenging existing beliefs about m6A mRNA regulation. Her lab at Columbia integrates high-throughput approaches to study m6A regulation and its role in diseases like acute myeloid leukemia (AML). During her postdoctoral work at Weill Cornell Medicine under Dr. Samie Jaffrey, she contributed to major findings linking elevated m6A levels to AML.

Dr. Zaccara joined Columbia University in 2022, bringing expertise that benefits collaborative research in RNA modifications across various CUIMC departments.
