Overview

biography_-_dr._nicole_lamanna

Nicole Lamanna, MD, is a Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Hematologic Malignancies Section of the Hematology/Oncology Division. Dr. Lamanna is a hematologist/oncologist whose research interests include lymphoid leukemias, specifically chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).

Dr. Lamanna is a pioneering investigator and internationally recognized leader in CLL. As the inaugural incumbent of the Judy Horrigan Professorship of Medicine, she has expanded Columbia’s CLL research efforts, elevated the public profile of the disease, and advanced some of the most promising avenues of research for its treatment. Her work has been widely published in leading peer-reviewed journals, including Blood, The New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of Clinical Oncology, eJHaem, Blood Advances, and Clinical Lymphoma, Myeloma & Leukemia, shaping both academic research and frontline patient care. She is a frequent invited speaker at major national and international forums, including the American Society of Hematology (ASH), the European Hematology Association (EHA), and the Society of Hematologic Oncology (SOHO), where she presents on targeted therapies, emerging agents, and personalized approaches to CLL treatment. Through her innovative research, clinical expertise, and leadership in clinical trials, Dr. Lamanna has helped redefine CLL as a chronic, manageable condition for many patients. While curative therapy remains a goal, therapies developed through trials she has led at Columbia have significantly improved patient outcomes and life expectancy. A dedicated patient advocate, she is deeply committed to education, access to expert care, and delivering both cutting-edge treatment and compassionate clinical care.

She earned her medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed her fellowship in Hematology-Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center

Research

As we work to establish an improved standard of care for CLL, our goal is to maximize impact while minimizing side effects. This can be a challenge – chemotherapy drugs previously considered the standard of care caused significant side effects, and were so poorly tolerated by patients, that continued use proved unsustainable. We have been successful in lessening these patients’ burden of disease with novel targeted therapies, which are now the new standard of care in treating patients with CLL (i.e. Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitors and B-cell lymphoma 2 inhibitors).

Building on transformational advances, we have been driving forward a robust clinical research agenda to further refine therapeutic precision and broaden effective options for patients with CLL. At Columbia University, we offer an array of clinical trials from exploring next-generation targeted approaches to investigating emerging bispecific antibodies and therapies for relapsed refractory and Richter’s transformation. For a complete list of open clinical trials, please visit our Clinical Trials.
