Spotlight on Radiation Oncology: Celebrating Milestones

Congratulations to the following clinicians and scientists at Columbia’s Department of Radiation Oncology for recent achievements, awards, and milestones.

Manuela Buonanno, MD, an associate research scientist in the Center For Radiological Research (CRR), received a Career Development Award from the Radiation Research Foundation for her pilot project, “Normal Tissue Remodeling and Tumor Control After Proton FLASH Irradiation”. 

Tom Hei, PhD, vice-chairman of radiation oncology, has been awarded the 2020 Radiation Research Society (RRS) Distinguished Service Award. This award recognizes individuals who have given continued service to the RRS above and beyond the call of duty to help further the goals and objectives of the society. 

Igor Shuryak, MD, PhD, assistant professor of radiation oncology and member in the CRR, has been awarded the 2020 RRS Michael Fry Research Award for outstanding junior scientists.

Katie Spina, MD, assistant professor of radiation oncology, was recently awarded the Roentgen Research Award for outstanding laboratory research.

Horia Vulpe, MD, assistant professor of radiation oncology, received the Association of Residents in Radiation Oncology (ARRO) Teaching Award for his commitment and efforts to residency education.

Tony Wang, MD, co-director of the Center for Radiosurgery, was accepted into the Columbia 2020 class of the Academy of Clinical Excellence (ACE). The ACE was established by Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S) to define, recognize, and perpetuate excellence in clinical care by faculty, trainees, and students. It honors the clinical faculty who contribute to VP&S through patient care marked by evidence-based clinical science coupled with deeply compassionate humanism.
