The Herbert and Florence Irving Institute for Cancer Dynamics will continue its seminar series on the topic of mathematical sciences underpinning cancer research. The monthly seminars take place on the second Wednesday of the month, 2:00-3:00 PM EST. The presentations are open to the Columbia community (in person and online) and to researchers outside Columbia (via Zoom). On Wednesday, April 8th (2:00 PM ET), IICD welcomes Dr. Andrea Sottoriva from Human Technopole. Seminar hosted by Dr. Sanja Vickovic. Andrea’s research focusses on the development of new computational approaches to measure cancer evolution in patients, with the aim of predicting the future course of the disease. Andrea’s lab also integrates patient-derived experimental models and multiomics data, with evolutionary methods to design new treatment strategies that aim at preventing and controlling drug resistance. He authored several studies published in prestigious scientific journals, including Science, Nature, Nature Genetics and Cancer Discovery. Among his articles are “The co-evolution of the genome and epigenome in colorectal cancer” (Nature, 2022), “Phenotypic plasticity and genetic control in colorectal cancer evolution” (Nature, 2022), “Subclonal reconstruction of tumors by using machine learning and population genetics” (Nature Genetics, 2020), “Detecting repeated cancer evolution from multi-region tumor sequencing data” (Nature Methods, 2018), “Longitudinal liquid biopsy and mathematical modelling of clonal evolution forecast waiting time to treatment failure in a phase II colorectal cancer clinical trial” (Cancer Discovery, 2018), and “Patient-derived organoids model treatment response of metastatic gastrointestinal cancers” (Science, 2018). In 2016 he was awarded the Cancer Research UK Future Leaders in Cancer Research prize. She is also affiliated with the Department of Molecular Biology and the Omenn-Darling Bioengineering Institute.  Her group works broadly in computational molecular biology, as well as its interface with machine learning and algorithms. She has been on the faculty at Princeton University since 1999. She received her A.B. and S.M. degrees from Harvard University and her Ph.D. from MIT, all in computer science. Among her awards are the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) and the Rheinstein Junior Faculty Award from Princeton’s School of Engineering and Applied Science. She was named a Fellow of the ACM in 2019, and of the ISCB in 2018.
