Registered Nurses will be caring for you during your visit to the Adult Infusion Center. Oncology nurses specialize in caring for patients with cancer and other diagnoses requiring infusion therapy. Based on orders from your provider, they will perform initial and ongoing assessments, administer medications (chemotherapy and biotherapy, antibiotics and other medications), blood products and hydration fluids.
Our nurses will provide your treatment in a safe and caring manner and in line with the treatment plan developed by your physician. As always, they will monitor you for any reactions to the treatments prescribed. For your added safety, all chemotherapy / biotherapy / immunotherapy, and blood products are verified by two (2) nurses before administration.
Oncology social workers are important members of the health care team and are responsible for helping patients navigate the health care system and find support to manage the day-to-day challenges of living with cancer.
Services provided by our social work team include the following:
- Counseling and support groups
- Psychosocial evaluations and treatment planning
- Education and consultative services
- Crisis intervention
- Coordination of Home Care Services
- Coordination with American Cancer Society
Proper nutrition is always important, but especially when you are undergoing treatment. The Adult Infusion Center offers complimentary consultations with our registered dietitian on-site or by phone Mondays and Thursdays 9:00 AM- 5:00 PM, and alternate Tuesdays.
Questions that our dietitian can help you with include:
- General guidelines for a balanced diet
- Nutrition guidelines for specific cancers and treatments
- Eating strategies that may improve treatment side effects
- Weight management
The Patient / Nurse Navigator program connects patients and their families with a cancer education and support specialist, known as a Patient / Nurse Navigator. The Navigator serves as a personal guide through the psychosocial and emotional challenges. The Navigator assists patients, based on their individual needs, from the time of diagnosis through treatment. Services for patients and their caregivers may include:
- Referrals to NewYork-Presbyterian sponsored resources such as the Patient Resources Library, Nutritionist, or Social Work Department
- Transportation and insurance information
- Connections for patients and their families to community resources and support groups.
Pastoral Care Services
The Pastoral Care Department is committed to meeting the religious and spiritual needs of patients and their loved ones. Services are available by request and can be made by contacting a member of the Infusion Center Team or by contacting the Pastoral Care Department directly.
The Pastoral Care Department is open weekdays between the hours of 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM and can be reached by calling (212) 305-5817.
Our Patient Services Administration team is available to respond to patient, family, or visitor concerns about patient care, patients’ rights, and services provided by any department. Patients and families may contact Patient Services Administration, Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM by calling (212) 305-5904. After hours, you will receive a message to have the Hospital Operator page the Administrator on Call.
NewYork-Presbyterian provides free interpreter services to patients/families in their preferred language. This includes patients/families who speak foreign languages, have limited English proficiency (LEP), use sign language (Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deaf/Blind individuals), or require the use of Assistive Listening Devices to effectively participate in all treatment processes. Please ask an Infusion Center staff member for additional information.
Note: The use of family members or friends as interpreters should be avoided and persons younger than sixteen (16) years of age should only be used in an emergency.
