Residency Training Program

The Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (NYPH) is one of the nation's major university medical centers and is a NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Cancer Center includes prevention programs, diagnostic services, basic science programs, clinical programs, translational research and support services. Over 1,000 new patients receive treatment in the Department of Radiation Oncology each year.

  • Four-year certified training program, fully accredited by the ACGME (American College of Graduate Medical Education), leading to the American Board of Radiology certification in Radiation Oncology.
  • Candidates must first complete an approved PGY-1 internship at an ACGME-accredited residency program: Transitional, Surgery, or Medicine internships are encouraged.
  • Radiation Oncology Department of NYPH/CUIMC is comprised of two floors -- Administration/Conference rooms on one level, and the newly expanded Irving Radiation Oncology Center with clinical and treatment areas on the second level. Our multi-million dollar upgrade includes a modern patient waiting/reception area with skylights, and two new treatment machines: Varian TrueBeam (offers high-precision image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery) and Siemens’ ARTISTE (CT-on-rails technology allows real-time imaging of tumor response). The department now has:
    • 4 megavoltage External Beam Radiotherapy (EBRT) units with electron and IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) capability
    • Gamma Knife
    • 2 CT Simulators
    • Brachytherapy equipment in new HDR suite
    • IntraBeam IORT (Intraoperative Radiation Therapy)
  • Resident Education is focused on the six ACGME Core Competencies: patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, systems-based practice, professionalism, and interpersonal and communications skills. Special emphasis is placed on the care of patients participating in national (COG, RTOG, GOG, SWG, etc.) and intramural clinical trials.
  • In addition to clinical rotations among six full-time faculty, resident education includes weekly attendance at conferences, tumor boards, grand rounds, and site-specific department conferences; monthly Journal Club, M&M, and Program Director/Resident meetings.
  • Formal lectures in Radiation Physics are provided weekly by Dr. Cheng-Shie Wuu and the medical physics faculty.
  • Weekly Radiobiology course under directorship of Dr. Sally Amundson and Dr. Tom Hei, Vice Chair of Research.
  • Visiting professor series allows outstanding teachers in radiation oncology and scientists in related fields from the USA and abroad to present lectures and to be available for resident-teaching sessions.
  • Residents are encouraged to attend conferences at other hospitals in the NYC area and to attend monthly meetings of the Radiation Oncology Group of the New York Roentgen Society.

Dr. Simon Cheng, Assistant Professor, is the Director of the training program. He is a physician/scientist with his own laboratory in the Center for Radiological Research.

Dr. David Horowitz, Assistant Professor, is the Associate Director of the training program and Director of Medical Education.

The residency training program in Radiation Oncology at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (Columbia campus) successfully blends a small and individualized program with one of the major medical schools and teaching hospitals of the nation in one of the most dynamic cities in the world.
