Department of Surgery
Division of Colorectal Surgery
Introduction:

Colorectal surgery is Dr. Feingold’s passion. In order to provide exceptional care, in addition to finishing training in General Surgery, Dr. Feingold completed two advanced surgery fellowships in Colorectal Surgery and in Surgical Oncology. Dr. Feingold has been on faculty at Columbia University for over 15 years and is board-certified in both Colorectal Surgery and General Surgery. A particular interest of Dr. Feingold’s is the care of patients with diverticulitis and he has published and presented on this topic numerous times.

Dr. Feingold has been involved with the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons since 2007 and has served on a number of National committees shaping how colorectal surgeons care for their patients. From 2015-2018 Dr. Feingold served as the vice-chair of the Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee and he has been the chair of that committee since May 2018. This committee reviews the world literature related to colorectal diseases and publishes guidelines about how surgeons diagnose and treat patients with these conditions. In addition, Dr. Feingold has published over 70 papers and book chapters, has lectured extensively and has edited two colorectal surgery textbooks. Beginning in about 2010 Dr. Feingold developed a novel operation to help patients with anal fissure that protects the anal sphincter muscle. Typically, when patients with anal fissure have ongoing pain or bleeding despite medical treatment the next option is to undergo a muscle cutting operation called partial lateral internal sphincterotomy (PLIS). During Dr. Feingold’s operation no muscle is cut and instead the anal fissure is cleaned out (debrided) and cauterized and a steroid (Kenalog) is injected into the fissure. Over 400 patients have undergone this procedure with a high success rate and a low complication rate. Out of town patients who are interested in possibly coming to see Dr. Feingold can call the office for information about making these arrangements.
