Andrew J. Einstein, MD


Andrew J. Einstein is Victoria and Esther Aboodi Assistant Professor of Medicine (in Radiology) at Columbia University, as well as Director of Cardiac CT Research and Co-Director of Cardiac CT and MRI. Born and raised in New Jersey, he received an A.B. from Princeton University and attended Mount Sinai School of Medicine, where he received an M.D. as well as a Ph.D. in the Department of Biomathematical Sciences. His graduate research focused on developing image analysis methodology in microscopy. He also received an M.S. in patient-oriented research/biostatistics from Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health. After internship and residency in internal medicine at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, he completed a fellowship in cardiology at Mount Sinai, where his training focused on clinical cardiology and cardiac imaging.

Dr. Einstein joined the Columbia faculty in 2006. His clinical activities are centered on the Nuclear Cardiology and Cardiac CT/MRI services, and he has served on the attending staff in the cardiac ICU, consultation service, and outpatient clinic. His research is currently funded by an R01 from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and by the Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Scholars Program. Dr. Einstein’s current research interests lie in the areas of radiation safety in cardiology, multimodal correlative imaging studies, including applications of SPECT-CT and cardiac MRI, applications of cardiac CT in coronary heart disease and electrophysiology, technology assessment, and radioisotope supply. He has a particular interest in the measurement of radiation dose and estimation of attributable cancer risks from cardiac CT, SPECT, PET, and fluoroscopy procedures, and in the development of strategies to minimize these risks to patients and practitioners. His work in this area has been influential in affecting clinical practice, and has been widely reported in the popular press and cited in the scientific literature. For this work, Dr. Einstein has received the American College of Cardiology's Douglas P. Zipes Distinguished Young Scientist Award, the American Federation for Medical Research's Junior Physician Investigator Award, and the Lewis Katz Cardiovascular Research Prize for a Young Investigator.

Dr. Einstein is the author or coauthor of over 90 papers, abstracts, and book chapters. He serves as a reviewer for numerous medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Lancet, Circulation, and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. He is Associate Editor of the Journal of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography and a member of the editorial board of JACC Imaging. He has served as an invited lecturer for many organizations, including the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, European Society of Cardiology, Radiological Society of North America, American Association of Physicists in Medicine, and the U.S. Senate, in an AAAS Briefing. He is a member of the Boards of Directors of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology and the Society for Clinical and Translational Science, and a question writer for the Certification Board of Nuclear Cardiology and the Certification Board of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography. Dr. Einstein has been involved in radiation protection policy from the hospital to the international level, serving on Columbia’s Joint Radiation Safety Committee and committees addressing radiation safety in medicine of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (SC 2-3), and International Commission on Radiological Protection (TG 62), as well as as a consultant to the International Atomic Energy Agency and the US Food and Drug Administration. He has been actively involved in the research training of numerous medical students, residents, and fellows.
