Gestational Trophoblastic Disease: About

Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) is a group of rare conditions where the abnormal cells come from the placenta formed in pregnancy.  This tissue normally grows to form part of the placenta, and normally surrounds the fertilized egg in the uterus.  However, in abnormal growth, a tumor forms. Most GTD does not spread like other cancers, but some types will become malignant and spread to nearby tissues or distant parts of the body.
