MDS: Symptoms

Symptoms of MDS are related to the type of blood cell affected.  In many patients a diagnosis is made as a result of finding abnormal blood counts during a routine physical exam.

  • Low red blood cells lead to anemia: Headaches, lightheadedness, shortness of breath, pallor and fatigue.
  • Low white blood cells can result in an increased risk of infections that are recurrent and difficult to treat
  • Low platelets produce bruising, frequent nosebleeds, and red spots (petichiae) on the skin.
